  Niksun NetDetector™: Your Next Line of Defense After Firewalls
Niksun NetDetector is a powerful, non-intrusive network surveillance appliance for IP networks. NetDetector analyzes network traffic at very high data rates to help you detect and catch malicious activity—even after the fact. Unlike ordinary diagnostic tools, NetDetector inspects all data traffic for improper activity, detects intruders, and sets alarms while continuously and simultaneously recording and analyzing every packet in real time. All activities associated with an intrusion can be recreated and traced to identify the intruder, determine what they saw, reveal how they breached security, provide evidence for prosecution, and point to necessary improvements.

  Unique Data Capture Capabilities
NetDetector monitors all traffic coming through the firewall as well as internal traffic on the LAN. It captures all data traffic so that in the event of a breach a complete activity trail is available. Byte-for-byte analysis and playback of network breaches can be viewed, allowing you to pursue prosecution and invoke procedures or system changes to prevent future breaches.

From an intranet or extranet standpoint, NetDetector allows you to play back historical sessions by user, viewing each transaction that occurred as the user traversed the network, seeing http pages—screen for screen—just as the user did. No other system provides this inclusive level of data capture.

  Scalable Modular Architecture
NetDetector integrates a variety of capabilities in a self-contained appliance architecture that scales flexibly to support both large and small networks. The common appliance platform is based on an Intel motherboard with single or dual 800 MHz CPUs, a standard 512 MB RAM expandable to 1GB, and Seagate 73 GB disk packs providing onboard storage. Each model supports all major transfer protocols as well as a wide variety of physical interfaces.

Niksun currently offers a portable platform unit (NK-3100PB) for laboratory and field use as well as two units for 19-inch rackmount installation. The NK-2000SL rackmount model, a 2U unit with four disk bays and two 66 MHz PCI slots, is ideal for use in small networks or as a distributed appliance in a large network node. The NK-3200RC appliance is on a 5U chassis incorporating 10 disk bays, six PCI slots (two 66 MHz and four 33 MHz), and a SCSI disk controller providing an additional SCSI port. It can be configured with a wide array of application, processor, storage and network interface cards to meet the specific requirements of the larger network.
